The STAY Newsletter

STAY is a Contemporary/Cool Jazz ensemble. The band was initiated by Charles (Chuck) Ayers, drummer and Michael Stevenson, guitarist/synth-guitarist. Chuck and Michael performed together in the group, "Just Us" over the course of about three years. They both wanted to form a contemporary jazz band; this lead to the inception of "STAY".

Chuck introduced Michael to pianist David Tucker, and Michael suggested using former Labyrinth bassist Dwight Young. During the first guest appearance by STAY, David invited saxophonist/flutist Opelton Parker to sit in. Opelton was then invited to become the fifth member. STAY's first public appearance was at the Detroit Music Hall.

Performances

On May 26, 2009, STAY had a successful and well-received second performance at the Detroit Music Halls' "Jazz Cafe".

July 26, 2009 STAY performed at Detroit, Michigan's legendary "Bakers Keyboard Lounge". Check back soon and we will post their performance schedule.

STAY has also been invited to perform at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit.

STAY had a guest bassist, George Williams with the group in October of 2009 until March of 2010 working in tandem with Dwight Young. In August of 2010 rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Phil Grafton joined the ranks to help out until a permanent keyboardist could be found.

Stay has undergone personnel changes: when Chuck and Michael first decided to begin a Contemporary/Cool Jazz band back in 2007, the first bassist was Kneil Ivory, who was a former member of Just Us. Unfortunately, Kneil had other commitments. Kneil has returned, replacing Dwight. Replacing David on keyboards is Trent Holley. Trent and Michael worked together in a Gospel group and had met via a recording session at WaterFall Studios back in 2004.
